The Guide

Before you hire for outbound, read this.

A plain guide for companies thinking about a first sales development hire, or a second one after the first did not work. It takes a few minutes, and it may save you a hire.

Start with your last few good deals

Write down where each one came from. A referral, a show, a past colleague, someone who found you. Be honest about it. For most established companies the answer is the same name over and over: someone already knew you.

That is a real strength. It also tells you that every other way of reaching a buyer has never been tested. Hiring a rep into that gap means asking one person to test all of it, alone, while carrying a target.

Questions worth a straight answer

Answer these before anyone is hired.

There is no score. Just notice which ones get a no.

  1. Could you name the companies you most want to win next, and the person at each who feels the problem you solve?
  2. Do you know what that person would need to hear before they would take a first call with a stranger?
  3. Is there someone whose job it is to start conversations with people who do not know you, with real time set aside for it?
  4. Does anyone read outgoing messages before they go, and send back the weak ones?
  5. If a buyer searched for your problem, or asked an AI for a shortlist, would your name come up?
  6. If your best seller left next week, would the method stay behind?

What an idle channel looks like

It rarely looks like nothing. It looks like a content folder nobody publishes from. A paid account switched off after a test. A list bought once and never worked. A website that says what you do and answers nothing a buyer would ask.

Each of those is a channel that was started and never run. The parts exist. The system does not.

Why the hire struggles without a system

A new rep is asked to build the list, find the reason to talk, write the message, check their own work and hit a number, all at once. Few people can do that. The ones who can are rarely looking for an entry seat.

So the hire does not ramp, and the company decides outbound is not for them. The test was never fair.

What to do instead

Build the system first. Prove it in the open. Then hire into it, or keep running it with the people you have. That is the whole idea behind our name.

If a few of those got a no
